Indications & Dosage
Lower Respiratory tract Infection, Pneumonia: Adults: 500 mg every 6 hr or 1 gm every 12 hr. Children 9 month: 25-50 mg/ kg/day given every 6 hr or every 12 hr (up to adult dose). Otitis Media: Children 9 month: 75-100 mg/kg/day given every 6 hr or every 12 hr. Max: 4 gm/day. Upper Respiratory Infection, Tonsillitis, Pharyngitis: Adults: 250 mg every 6 hr or 500 mg every 12 hr. Children 9 month: 25-50 mg/kg/day given every 6 hr or every 12 hr. Skin Infection: Adults: 250 mg every 6 hr or 500 mg every 12 hr. Children 9 month: 25-50 mg/kg/day given every 6 hr or every 12 hr (up to adult dose). Urinary Tract Infection: Adults: 500 mg every 12 hr; serious infection; 500 mg every 6 hr or 1 gm every 12 hr. Children 9 month: 25-50 mg/kg/day given every 6 hr or every 12 hr (up to adult dose) BY IM OR IV INF: Adults: 2-4 gm daily in divided doses. Children: 50-100 mg/kg daily in divided doses.
Administration
Reconstitute for IM with sterile water for injection 2 ml in 500 mg and 4 ml in 1 gm vial. The preparation is single use only. Reconstitute for IV infusion with sterile water for injection 5 ml in 500 mg vial shake to make solution. Transfer the entire contents to the IV infusion diluent. Protect from light.
Compatibility
Dextrose 5% or 10 %, NaCI 0.9%.
Stability
11 hours at room temperature and 12 hours when stored in refrigerator.
Precautions
Penicillin hypersensitivity, renal impairment.
Interactions
Probenecid, anticoagulants, aminoglycosides.
Side Effects
Abdominal discomfort, agranulocytosis, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, aplastic anaemia, blood disorders, confusion, disturbances in liver enzymes, dizziness, eosinophilia, haemolytic anaemia, hallucinations, headache, hypertonia, leucopenia, nervousness, pruritus, rashes, fever and arthralgia, sleep disturbances, urticaria, GI disturbances, Rare: Stevens-Johnson syndrome, thrombocytopenia, toxic epidermal necrolysis, transient cholestatic jaundice, transient hepatitis
