Composition
Tab 0.5 mg/1 mg: Varenicline 0.5 mg/1 mg.
Indications & Dosage
To aid smoking cessation: Adult: Initially 500 mcg once daily for 3 days, increased to 500 mcg twice daily for 4 days, then 1 mg twice daily for 11 weeks; reduced if not tolerated to 500 mcg twice daily, 12-week course can be repeated in abstinent individuals to reduce risk of relapse.
Precautions
History of cardiovascular disease, history of psychiatric illness (may exacerbate), conditions that may lower seizure threshold, predisposition to seizures. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Interactions
Theophylline, warfarin, insulin, other drug me-tabolized by CYP1A2. Cimetidine.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Lactation
Caution advised or effect undetermined.
Side Effects
GI disturbances, headache, sleep disorders, taste disturbance, abnormal dreams, appetite changes, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, anxiety, stomatitis, arthralgia, asthenia, atrial fibrillation, chest pain, depression, dysarthria, dysuria, eye pain, irrational behavior, hypertension, hypertonia, hypoaesthesia, muscle spasm, palpitation, panic attack, pruritus, rash, restlessness, seizure, sexual dysfunction, sweating, tachycardia, thirst, tinnitus, tremor. Rare: Cerebrovascular accident
