Composition

Susp: Per 5 ml: Erythromycin ethylsuccinate equiv to 200 mg of erythromycin, bromhexine HCI 4 mg; powder for reconstitution. Tab: Erythromycin stearate equiv to 500 mg erythromycin,

Indications & Dosage

Susceptible infections in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity including respiratory-tract infections, skin and oral infections, and campylobacter enteritis (with mucolytic and expectorant actions): Adults & Children above 12 yrs: 1 tab twice daily may be increased in severe infections to 1 tab 3 or 4 times daily, to be taken before a meal. Children: Below 4 months (under 5 kg body wt): 1/2 tsp twice daily; 4 months-1 yr (5-10 kg body wt): 1 tsp twice daily; 1-6 yrs (10-25 kg body wt): 1 tsp 3 or 4 times daily; 6-12 yrs (over 25 kg body wt): 2 tsp 2 or 3 times daily.

Contraindications

Porphyria.

Precautions

Predisposition to prolonged QT interval, renal or hepatic impairment, myasthenia gravis.

Interactions

Amisulpride, tolterodine, astemizole, mizolastine, ergot derivatives, theophylline, carbamazepine, oral anticoagulants, digoxin, cisapride, alfentanil, bromocriptine, cyclosporin, disopyramide, amiodarone, hexobarbitone, midazolam, phenytoin, triazolam, valproate, statins, zopiclone, tacrolimus, pimozide, quinidine, rifabutin.

Side Effects

Dyspepsia, headache, diarrhoea, GI disturbances, cholestatic jaundice, allergic reactions, reversible hearing loss, pancreatitis, cardiac effects, myasthenia-like syndrome, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis.
