Composition
Cap/Tab 20 mg/60 mg/120 mg: Orlistat 20 mg/60 mg/120 mg.
Indications & Dosage
Obesity with body mass index(BMI) 30 kg/m2 and greater, or BMI 28 kg/m2 and greater with other risk factors: Adults: 120 mg before, during or up to one hr after each main meal. Continue treatment after 12 wk if 5% of initial body weight is reduced. If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose of orlistat should be omitted. Advise diet rich in fruit and vegetables containing approx 30% calories from fat. Consider a multivitamin supplement Children: Not recommended.
Contraindications
Chronic malabsorption, cholestasis.
Precautions
Chronic kidney disease may impair absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, volume depletion. Monitor antidiabetic drug treatment as diabetic patients lose weight.
Interactions
Acarbose, anticoagulants, amiodarone, fat-soluble vitamins, cyclosporin.
Pregnancy
Caution advised.
Lactation
Contraindicated or not recommended.
Side Effects
Abdominal distension, abdominal pain, anxiety, faecal incontinence, faecal urgency, flatulence, gingival disorders, headache, hypoglycaemia, liquid stools, malaise, menstrual disturbances, oily leakage from rectum, oily stools, respiratory infections, tooth disorders, urinary tract infection, bullous eruptions, cholelithiasis, diverticulitis, hepatitis, hypothyroidism, oxalate nephropathy, rectal bleeding.
