Composition
Drop: Per ml: Ferrous sulphate 125 mg (elemental iron 25 mg).Syp: Per 5 ml: Ferrous sulphate 100 mg/200 mg. Tab:Ferrous sulphate 200 mg(elemental iron 65 mg)
Indications & Dosage
Prophylaxis of iron deficiency anaemia: Adults: 300 mg/day. Children: 1-2 mg Fe/kg/day upto a max of 15 mg/day. Iron deficiency Anaemia: Adults: 300 mg twice daily up to 300 mg 4 limes/day or 250 mg (extended released) 1 to 2 times a day. Children: 3 mg Fe/kg/day in 1 to 2 divided doses, in severe cases increase up to 4-6 mg Fe/kg/ day in 1 to 2 divided doses. Doses expressed in terms of elemental iron.
Contraindications
Hemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia, haemosiderosis, diverticular diseases, intestinal obstruction, red cell aplasia, repeated blood transfusion, symptoms of intolerance.
Precautions
GI disorder, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal stricture.
Interactions
Tetracycline, penicillamines, antacids.
Side Effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, GI upset, staining of teeth, dark stool, epigastric discomfort
