Composition
Tab 25 mg/50 mg/100 mg: Acarbose 25 mg/50 mg/100mg.
Indications & Dosage
Type 2 Diabetes mellitus inadequately controlled by diet with or without oral hypoglycaemic drugs: Adult: Initially 50 mg daily, then increased to 50 mg 3 times a day for 6-8 weeks, then increased if necessary to 100 mg 3 times a day (max. 200 mg 3 times a day) Children: Not recommended.
Contraindications
Hernia, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, previous abdominal surgery, hepatic or severe renal impairment, colonic ulceration, intestinal obstruction, chronic digestive or absorption disorders, conditions exacerbated by flatulence.
Precautions
In renal impairment, avoid if eGFR less than 25 ml/minute/1.73m2.May enhance hypoglycaemic effects of insulin and sulfonylureas (hypoglycaemic episodes may be treated with oral glucose but not with sucrose).Monitor hepatic transaminase, review treatment if persistently elevated.
Interactions
Adsorbents, pancreatic enzymes, neomycin, cholestyramine. Monitor closely patients on other hypoglycaemic therapy.

Side Effects
Abdominal distention and pain, diarrhoea, flatulence, soft stools, Rare: Abnormal liver function, nausea, skin reactions, hepatitis, ileus, jaundice, oedema.
