Composition

Tab 25 mg/50 mg/100 mg: Sumatriptan (as suc-cinate) 25 mg/50 mg/100 mg. Cap 100 mg: Sumatriptan (as succinate) 100 mg.

Indications & Dosage

Treatment of acute migraine, acute cluster headache: Adult: Initially 50-100 mg for 1 dose, followed by 50-100 mg after at least 2 hours if required, to be taken only if migraine recurs (patient not responding to initial dose should not take second dose for same attack); max. 300 mg per day.

Contraindications

Coronary vasospasm, ischaemic heart disease, uncontrolled, moderate and severe hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, previous cerebrovascular accident, previous myocardial infarction, previous transient ischaemic attack, Prinzmetals angina, severe hepatic impairment

Precautions

Predisposition to coronary artery disease, elderly, history of seizures, mild controlled hypertension, pre-existing cardiac disease, risk factors for seizures, renal or hepatic impairment (reduce dose)

Interactions

MAOIs, ergotamine, SSR1s, St. Johns Wort.

Pregnancy

Avoid unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk.

Lactation

withhold breast-feeding for 12 hours after treatment.

Side Effects

Anxiety, arthralgia, bradycardia, diarrhoea, dizziness, drowsiness, dyspnea, fatigue, flushing, myalgia, nausea, sensory disturbances, transient increase in blood pressure, vomiting, weakness, hypersensitivity reactions, hypotension, ischaemic colitis, neck stiffness. Rare: Arrhythmias, angina, dystonia, myocardial infarction, nystagmus, palpitation, Raynauds syndrome, seizures, sweating, tachycardia, transient ischaemic ECG changes, tremor, visual disturbances
