Indications & Dosage

Infections caused by gram-positive pathogens, anaerobic infections, chronic middle ear infection, colitis, impetigo, osteomyelitis, pneumonia: ORAL: Adults: 500 mg three or four times daily; Children1-6 months: 1.25-2.5 ml three times daily; 6 months-2 yrs: 2.5-5 ml three times daily; 3-9 yrs: 2.5-5 ml four times daily; 10-12 yrs, 5-10 ml four times daily. BY IM INJ OR IV INF: Adults: 600 mg by IM inj 12-24 hourly or IV INF 8-12 hourly. Children 1 month & older: 10 mg/kg by IM inj 12-24 hourly; alternatively 10-20 mg/kg daily by IV INF in 2 or 3 divided doses at 8-12 hr intervals.

Administration

For IV injection 1 gm lincomycin diluted in not less than 100 ml of appropriate solution and infused over a period of not less than one hour. Dilute 600 mg dose in at least 100 ml D5W, 010W, NS, dextrose 5% in NS, or other compatible diluent. Dilute higher doses in 100 ml of a compatible diluent for each gm being given.

Stability

Store at 20C-25C (68F-77F). Diluted lincomycin in an appropriate solution is physically compatible for 24 hours at room temperature unless otherwise indicated.

Contraindications

Lincosamide sensitivity.

Precautions

Renal, hepatic, endocrine or metabolic disorders. Check liver function and blood regularly with pro-longed use.

Interactions

Neuromuscular blocking drugs.

Abdominal discomfort, anaphylactoid reactions, antibiotic-associated colitis, diarrhoea (discontinue treatment), eosinophilia, exfoliative dermatitis, jaundice, leucopenia, nausea, oesophageal ulcers, oesophagitis, polyarthritis, pruritus, rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, taste disturbances, thrombocytopenia, toxic epidermal necrolysis, urticaria, vesiculobullous dermatitis, vomiting
