Composition
Inf: Per 100 ml: Metronidazole 500 mg. Susp: Per 5 ml: Metronidazole (as benzoate) 200 mg. Tab 200 mg/400 mg: Metronidazole 200 mg/400 mg.
Indications & Dosage
Anaerobic infections: ORAL: Adult: 400 - 500 mg every 8 hours usually treated for 7 days (for 10-14 days in Clostridium difficile infection). Children 1 month: 7.5 mg/kg every 12 hours; 2 months-11 yrs: 7.5 mg/kg every 8 hours (max.per dose 400 mg); 12-17 years: 400 mg every 8 hours usually treatedfor 7 days (for 10-14 days in Clostridium difficile infection). BY IV INF: Adult: 500 mg every 8 hours usually treated for 7 days (for 10-14 days in Clostridium difficile infection), INF to be given over 20 minutes. Helicobacter pylori eradication in combination with other drugs: ORAL: Adult: 400 mg 2-3 times daily. Helicobacter pylori eradication failure (combination, two-week regimen): ORAL: Adult: 400-500 mg 3 times a day for 2 weeks. Fistulating Crohns disease: ORAL: Adult: 10-20 mg/kg daily in divided doses, usual dose 400-500 mg 3 times a day usually given for 1 month but no longer than 3 months (risk of peripheral neuropathy). Leg ulcers and pressure sores: ORAL: Adult: 400 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. Bacterial vaginosis (including Gardnerella vaginalis infection): ORAL: Adult: 400-500 mg twice daily for 5-7 days, alternatively 2 g for 1 dose. Pelvic inflammatory disease: ORAL: Adult: 400 mg twice daily for 14 days. Acute ulcerative gingivitis: ORAL: Adult: 400 mg every 8 hours for 3 days. Children 1-2 yrs: 50 mg every 8 hours for 3 days; 3-6 yrs: 100 mg every 12 hours for 3 days; 7-9 yrs: 100 mg every 8 hours for 3 days; 10-17 yrs: 200-250 mg every 8 hours for 3 days. Acute oral infections: ORAL: Adult: 400 mg every 8 hours for 3-7 days Children 1-2 yrs: 50 mg every 8 hours for 3-7 day; 3-6 yrs: 100 mg every 12 hours for 3-7 days; 7-9 yrs: 100 mg every 8 hours for 3-7 days; 10-17 years: 200-250 mg every 8 hours for3-7 days. Surgical prophylaxis: ORAL: Adult: 400-500 mg, to be administered 2 hours before surgery, then 400-500 mg every 8 hours if required for up to 3 doses (in high-risk procedures) BY IV INF: Adult: 500 mg, to be administered up to 30 minutes before the procedure, then 500 mg every 8 hours if required for up to 3 further doses (in high-risk procedures). Invasive intestinal amoebiasis, Extra-intestinal amoebiasis (including liver abscess): ORAL: Adult: 800 mg 3 times a day for 5 days in intestinal infection (for 5-10 days in extra-intestinal infection). Children 1-2 yrs: 200 mg 3 times a day; 3-6 yrs: 200 mg 4 times a day; 7-9 yrs: 400 mg 3 times a day; 10-17 yrs: 800 mg 3 times a day; doses for 5 days inintestinal infection (for 5-10 days in extra-intestinal infection). Urogenital trichomoniasis: ORAL: Adult: 200 mg 3 times a day for 7 days, alternatively400-500 mg twice daily for 5-7 days, alternatively 2 g for 1 dose Children 1-2 yrs: 50 mg 3 times a day for 7 days; 3-6 yrs: 100 mg twice daily for 7 days; 7-9 yrs: 100 mg 3 times a day for 7 days; 10-17 yrs: 200 mg 3 times a day for 7 days, alternatively 400-500 mg twice daily for 5-7 days, alternatively 2 g for 1 dose. Giardiasis: ORAL: Adult: 2 g once daily for 3 days, alternatively 400 mg3 times a day for 5 days, alternatively 500 mg twice daily for 7-10 days. Children 1-2 yrs: 500 mg once daily for 3 days; 3-6 yrs: 600-800 mg once daily for 3 days; 7-9 yrs: 1 g once daily for 3 days;10-17 yrs: 2 g once daily for 3 days, alternatively 400 mg 3 times a day for 5 days, alternatively 500 mgtwice daily for 7-10 days.
Administration
Administered by continuous intravenous infusion or by intermittent IV infusion over one hour. Do not give by direct IV injection. Do not administer IV metronidazole with aluminum needles or hubs or through same IV line as other drugs.

Side Effects
Anorexia, aseptic meningitis, furred tongue, GI disturbances, nausea, optic neuropathy, oral mucositis, taste disturbances, vomiting, leucopenia, urticaria GI disturbance, furred tongue, unpleasant taste, angioedema, CNS disturbances, dark urine, neuropathy and epileptiform seizures on long term therapy.
