ANTIMIGRAINE PREPARATIONS Antihistamine/Ergot alkaloid/Xanthine GSK

Composition

Tab: Ergotamine tartrate 2 mg, cyclizine HCI 50 mg, caffeine equiv to 100 mg caffeine hydrate.

Indications & Dosage

Treatment of acute migraine and migraine variants unresponsive to analgesics: Adult: 1 tablet, to be taken at onset, followed by 0.5-1 tablet after 30 minutes, then 0.5-1 tablet every 30 minutes if required, max. 3 tablets in 24 hours, max.4 tablets per attack, max. 6 tablets in one week.

Contraindications

Acute porphyrias, coronary heart disease, hyperthyroidism, severe or uncontrolled hypertension, obliterative vascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, Raynauds syndrome, sepsis, temporal arteritis, severe renal or hepatic impairment

Precautions

Anaemia, cardiac disease, dependence, elderly, epilepsy, glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, pyloroduodenal obstruction, severe heart failure; may cause fall in cardiac output and associated increase in heart rate, susceptibility to angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention.

Interactions

Erythromycin, beta-blockers, CNS depressants.

Side Effects

Abdominal pain, drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, cyanosis, diarrhoea, hypoaesthesia, pain and weakness in extremities, paraesthesia, peripheral vasoconstriction. Rare: Arrhythmias, bradycardia, dyspnea, ergotism, increased blood pressure, intestinal ischaemia, myalgia, rash, tachycardia, urticaria
