Composition

Susp: Per 5 ml: Oxcarbazepine 300 mg. Tab 150 mg/300 mg/600 mg: Oxcarbazepine 150 mg/300 mg/600 mg

Indications & Dosage

Monotherapy or Adjunctive therapy for the treatment of focal seizures with or without secondary Generalized tonic-clonic seizures: Adult: Initially 300 mg twice daily, then increased in steps of up to 600 mg daily, adjusted according to response, dose to be adjusted at weekly intervals; usual dose 0.6-2.4 g daily in divided doses. Children 6-17 yrs: Initially 4-5 mg/kg twice daily (max. per dose 300 mg), then increased in steps of up to 5 mg/kg twice daily, adjusted according to response, dose to be adjusted at weekly intervals; maintenance 15 mg/kg twice daily; max. 46 mg/kg per day.

Precautions

Renal or severe hepatic impairment, cardiac conduction disorders, heart failure, hyponatraemia, elderly, hypersensitivity to carbamazepine. Monitor sodium levels in patients at risk prior to and during therapy. Cardiovascular disease; monitor weight in cardiac insufficiency or heart failure. Monitor for skin reactions; withdraw immediately if occur and do not restart therapy with oxcarbazepine. Avoid in acute porphyrias. Withdraw gradually.

Interactions

Hormonal contraceptives, cyclosporin, tacrolimus, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, lamotrigi-ne, valproate, MAOIs, lithium.

Pregnancy

Avoid unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk.

Lactation

Contraindicated, avoid

Side Effects

Agitation, aplastic anaemia, alopecia, amnesia, asthenia, ataxia, confusion, constipation, depression, diarrhoea, diplopia, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, hypertension, hyponatraemia, impaired concentration, nausea, nystagmus, rash, tremor, visual disorders vomiting, leucopenia, urticaria. Rare: Bone marrow depression, hypothyroidism, neutropenia, osteoporotic bone disorders, pancytopenia, suicidal ideation
