Composition

Tab 50 mg: Propylthiouracil 50 mg.

Indications & Dosage

Hyperthyroidism: Adult: 15-40 mg daily continue until the patient becomes euthyroid, usually after 4 to 8 weeks, higher doses should be prescribed under specialist supervision only, then reduced to 5-15 mg daily, reduce dose gradually, therapy usually given for 12 to 18 months Children: Initially, 5-15 mg daily in divided doses. Thyrotoxicosis: Adults: Initially, 20-60 mg daily in two or three divid-ed doses until patient is euthyroid. Maintenance; 5-15 mg daily for 6-18 months, Alternatively, continue with 20-60 mg daily and supplemental thyroxine 50-150 mcg daily for 6-18 months. Children: Initially, 5-15 mg daily in divided doses.

Precautions

Renal or hepatic impairment, age above 40, years.

Interactions

Warfarin, anticoagulants, correction of hyperthyroidism may alter disposition of beta-blockers, digoxin, the-ophylline

Pregnancy

Positive evidence of risk: Use only when no safer alternative exists for a serious problem.

Lactation

Contraindicated or not recommended.

Side Effects

Arthralgia, fever, headache, jaundice, leucopenia, malaise, mild GIdisturbances, nausea,pruritus, rash, taste disturbance. Rare: Agranulocytosis, alopecia, aplastic anaemia, bone marrow suppression, cutaneous vasculitis, encephalopathy, hepatic disorders, hepatic failure, hepatic necrosis, hepatitis, hypoprothrombinaemia, Jaundice, lupus erythematous-like syndromes, myopathy, nephritis, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia
