Composition

Sachet: 15 gm Calcium Polystyrene Sulphonate powder for oral suspension.

Indications & Dosage

Treatment and Prevention of Hyperkalaemia (elevated levels of Potassium in the blood): Adult: Oral: 15 gm suspended in 45-60 ml water or sugar water 3-4 times daily or as prescribed by physician. Children: 1 gm/kg of bodyweight per day in several divided doses suspended in water or sugar water.

Contraindications

Allergy to Polystyrene Sulphonate resins, high blood calcium level, hyperparathyroidism, multiple myeloma, sarcoidosis or metastatic carcinoma, obstructive bowel disease, hypophosphatemia, severe constipation, oral administration to neonates.

Precautions

Reduced GI motility, monitor for electroytes imbalance, monitor serum calcium, monitor serum potassium.

Interactions

Levothyroxine, Thyroxine, Tetracyclines, Cardiac glycosides, Lithium, Sorbitol

Pregnancy

Side Effects

Excess calcium in blood, low potassium level in blood, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, anorexia, faecalomas. Rare: Necrosis of the colon, acute inflamation of airways or Pneumonia caused by pulmonary inhalation of medicine (take medicine in suitable sitting position to avoid).
