Composition
Susp: Per 5 ml: Sulfadoxine 500 mg, pyrimethamine 25 mg. Tab: Sulfadoxine 500 mg, pyrimethamine 25 mg.
Indications & Dosage
Prophylaxis and treatment of plasmodium falciparum malaria: Prophylaxis: Adult: Non-immune patient: 1 tab as a single dose once in a week; Semi-immune patient: 2-3 tab once every four weeks. Children below 4 yr: quarter adult dose; 4-8 yr: half adult dose; 9-14 yr, three-quarters adult dose. Treatment: Adult & Children above 14 yr: 2-3 tab as a single dose. Children: Below 4 yr, 1/2 tab; 4-8 yr, 1 tab; 9-14 yr, 2 tab. All as a single dose. SUSPENSION: Treatment: Adults: 15 ml in single dose. Children: Single dose: below 4 yr: 2.5 ml; 4-6 yr: 5 ml; 7-9 yr: 7.5 ml; 10- 14 yr, 10 ml. Prophylaxis: Adults: Non-immune patient, 5 ml as a single dose once in a wk; Semi-immune patient, 10-15 ml once every four wk. Children below 4 yr: 2.5 ml as a single dose; 4-8 yr: 5 ml as a single dose; 9-14 yr: 7.5 ml as a single dose.
Contraindications
Severe liver or kidney dysfunction, Sulphonamide sensitivity, blood dyscrasias, neonates.
Precautions
Impaired renal or hepatic function, porphyria, psoriasis, severe gastrointestinal, neurological or blood disorders.Perform regular blood counts during long-term prophylaxis. Avoid excess sunlight exposure
Interactions
Folate inhibitors.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Lactation
Contraindicated or not recommended.
Side Effects
Abdominal pain, headache, nausea, flushing, skin rash (discontinue immediately), pharyngitis or pruritus occurs, GI distress, blood dyscrasias. Rarely erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyells syndrome.
