Composition
IV Soln: Per 1000 ml: Calcium chloride 6H20 0.48 gm, potassium chloride 0.3 gm, sodium chloride 8.6 gm, water for inj qs to make 1000 ml. Electrolyte Composition (mEq/L): Na+ 147, K+ 4,Ca++ 4
Indications & Dosage
Replenishment of Extracellular Fluid (E.C.F.), replenishment of Chloride: BY IV DRIP INF: Adults:Usually 500-1000 ml at one time by IV drip INF at therate of 300- 500 ml per hr (about 75-125 drops per min).
Precautions
Cardiac failure reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract diseases, hypertonic dehydration, renal failure, alkalosis, lactic acid metabolism disturbances. Sodium Chloride content of Ringers Solution is 8.6 gms/litre, whereas the daily requirement of NaCI for an adults is 3-6 gm. Therefore care should be taken in those cases where salt intake is restricted as in oedema, hypertension etc.
Side Effects
Cerebral, pulmonary and peripheral oedema, congestive heart failure, acidosis and electrolyte imbalance may occur with a large volume and/or rapid infusion.
