Composition

Susp: Per 5 ml: Sodium fusidate 250 mg. Tab: Sodium fusidate 250 mg.

Indications & Dosage

Staphylococcal skin infection: ORAL: Adult & Children above 12 yrs: 250 mg every 12 hours for 5-10 days. Penicillin-resistant staphylococcal infection including Osteomyelitis, Staphylococcal endocarditis in combination with other antibacterials: ORAL SUSP: Adult & Children above 12 yrs: 750 mg 3 times a day. Children 1-11 months: 15 mg/kg 3 times a day; 1-4 years: 250 mg 3 times a day; 5-11 years: 500 mg 3 times a day. ORAL TAB: Adult & Children above 12 yrs: 500 mg every 8 hours, increased to 1 g every 8 hours, increased dose can be used for severe Infections.

Precautions

Fusidic acid is incompletely absorbed and doses recommended for suspension are proportionately higher than those for sodium fusidate tablets, fusidic acid should not be used for longer than 10 days. Impaired biliary excretion; possibly increased risk of hepatotoxicity; avoid or reduce dose. Elimination may be reduced in hepatic impairment or biliary disease or biliary obstruction. Monitor liver function in hepatic impairment with high doses or on prolonged therapy.

Side Effects

Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dizziness, drowsiness, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, headache, malaise, pruritus, rash. Rare: Acute renal failure (usually with jaundice), blood disorders, reversible jaundice especially after high dosage (withdraw therapy if persistent)
