Composition

IV Soln 0.9%: Per 1000 mlsoln(0.9%): Sodium Chloride 9 gm, water for inj qs to make 1000 ml. Electrolyte composition (mEq/L): Na+ 154, Cl- 154. Osmolarity: 308 mosm/litre.

Indications & Dosage

Hyponatraemic and hypokalaemic dehydration due to severe diarrhoea, water and electrolytes insufficiency due to various conditions: Adults: 500-1000 ml at the-rate of 300-500 ml/hr (about 75-125 drops per min).

Precautions

Cardiac failure, reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract diseases, hypertonic dehydration. Sodium Chloride content of this solution is 9 gm/litre whereas, the daily requirement, renal failure due to renal diseases of NaCI for an adult is 3-6 gm. Therefore, care should be taken in those cases where salt intake is restricted as in oedema, hypertension etc.

Side Effects

Cerebral, pulmonary and peripheral oedema, acidosis and electrolyte imbalance may occur with a large volume and/or rapid infusion, congestive heart failure
