Composition
: Inj: Per Vial: Streptomycin Sulphate 1 gm; powder in vial.
Indications & Dosage
Tuberculosis, resistant to other treatment, in combination with other drugs: BY DEEP IM INJ: Adult: 15 mg/kg daily (max. per dose 1 g), reduce dose in those under 50 kg and those over 40 years Children: 20-40 mg/kg/day when used as a daily therapy max 1 gm/day.
Administration
Administered by deep IM injection well within the body of a relatively large muscle. IV route is not recommended. Reconstitute with 4.2, 3.2, or 1.8 ml of SWFI to yield solutions containing 200, 250, or 400 mg/ml, respectively.
Stability
Reconstituted solutions are stable for 1 week at room temperature and protect from light,
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Precautions
Streptomycin, is an aminoglycoside, associated with nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. Use with caution in patients with pre-existing vertigo, tinnitus, hearing impairment.
Interactions
Depolarizing and non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents, amphotericin, loop diuretics.
Pregnancy
Risk of auditory or vestibular nerve damage in the infant; avoid, use only when no safer alternative exists
Lactation
Caution advised, avoid
Side Effects
Anaphylactoid reactions, auditory damage, impaired neuromuscular transmission, irreversible ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, antibiotic-associated colitis, electrolyte disturbances, hypocalcaemia, hypokalaemia, nausea, peripheral neuropathy, stomatitis, vomiting
