Composition

Tab 25 mg/50 mg/100 mg/200 mg: Sulpiride 25 mg/50 mg/100 mg/200 mg. Cap 50 mg: Sulpiride 50 mg. Syp 250 mg: Per 5 ml: Sulpiride 250 mg.

Indications & Dosage

Schizophrenia with predominantly negative symptoms: Adult & Children above 14 yrs: 200-400 mg twice daily, increased gradually according to response; max. 800 mg per day. Elderly: Lower initial dose to be given, increased gradually according to response. Schizophrenia with mainly positive symptoms: Adult & Children above 14 yrs: 200-400 mg twice daily, increased gradually according to response; max. 2.4 g per day. Elderly: Lower initial dose to be given, increased gradually according to response.

Contraindications

Phaeochromocytoma, comatose states, severe hepatic, renal or blood disease, CNS depression, -alcohol intoxication.

Precautions

Aggressive, agitated or excited patients (even low doses may aggravate symptoms). Extra-pyramidal disturbances, hypertension, tumours, renal impairment, hypomania

Interactions

CNS depressants, antacids, lithium, antihypertensives, anticonvulsants, drugs that prolong QT interval.

Pregnancy

Avoid unless potential benefit outweighs risk

Lactation

Side Effects

Acute dystonic reactions such as facial and skeletal muscle spasms and oculogyric crises, leucopenia, hyperprolactinaemia, acute dyskinesias, akathisia, Parkinsonism, drowsiness, insomnia, agitation, tachycardia, arrhythmias; ECG changes, hypotension, antieholinergiceffects (e.g. dry mouth, blurred vision), respiratory depression, rash, photosensitivity, hypoglycaemia, impaired temperature regulation, convulsions, male sexual dysfunction, rarely, agranulocytosis, tardive dyskinesia, jaundice, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, pigmentary retinopathy
