Composition

Inj 200 mg/400 mg: Teicoplanin 200 mg/400 mg; powder in vials.

Indications & Dosage

Serious infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria such as complicated skin and soft-tissue infections, pneumonia: BY IV INJ, OR BY IV INF,OR BY IM INJ: Adult (body-weight up to 70 kg): Initially 400 mg every12 hours for 3 doses, followed by 400 mg once daily; (body-weight 70 kg and above): Initially 6 mg/kgevery 12 hours for 3 doses, then 6 mg/kg once daily. Children: Neonates: 16 mg/kg body weight as a single dose by IV INF over 30 min on first day, then 8 mg/kg body weight as single daily dose; over 2 months: Moderate infections: 10 mg/kg body weight by IV injection every 12 hr for first three doses, then 6 mg/kg by IV or IM injection as a single dose daily; Severe infections: 10 mg/kg by IV or IM injection as a single dose daily. Streptococcal or enterococcal endocarditis (in combination with another antibacterial): BY IV INJ, OR BY IV INF: Adult: Initially 10 mg/kg every 12 hours for 3-5 doses, then 10 mg/kg once daily, subsequent doses can be given by intramuscular injection. Bone and joint infections: BY IV INJ, OR BY IV INF: Adult: Initially 12 mg/kg every 12 hours for 3-5 doses, then 12 mg/kg once daily subsequent doses can begiven by intramuscular injection, increased risk of feverand rash with doses of 12 mg/kg. Surgical prophylaxis: BY IV INJECTION: Adult: 400 mg, to be administered up to 30 minutesbefore the procedure. Surgical prophylaxis in open fractures: BY IV INF: Adult: 800 mg, to be administered up to 30 minutes before skeletal stabilisation and definitive soft-tissue closure. Peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis: BY INTRAPERITONEAL ADMINISTRATION: Adult: (consult product literature).

Administration

It can be administered IV (bolus or infusion), IM or intraperitoneally in a single daily dose following one or more loading doses, intermittent in dextrose 5% or sodium chloride 0.9% or compound sodium lactate.

Precautions

Renal impairment; plasma-teicoplanin concentration should be monitored during parenteral maintenancetreatment. Also monitor renal and auditory functionduring prolonged treatment in renal impairment and elderly. Monitor blood counts and liver and kidney function tests required

Interactions

Aminoglycosides, cephaloridine, colistin.

Pregnancy

Caution advised, use only if potential benefit outweighs risk.

Pruritus, rash, bronchospasm, diarrhoea, dizziness, eosinophilia, fever, headache, leucopenia, mild hearingloss, nausea, thrombocytopenia, thrombophlebitis, tinnitus, vestibular disorders, vomiting, exfoliative dermatitis, nephrotoxicity, renal failure, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis
