Composition
Cap/Tab: Amantadine sulphate (or hydrochloride) 100 mg.
Indications & Dosage
Parkinsons disease: Adult: 100 mg daily for 1 week then increased to 100 mg twice daily, may be administered in conjunction with other treatment. Some patients may require higher doses; max. 400 mg per day. Post-herpetic neuralgia: Adult: 100 mg twice daily for 14 days (continued for another 14 days if necessary). Treatment of influenza A (not recommended): Adult: 100 mg daily 4-5 days Prophylaxis of influenza A (not recommended): Adult: 100 mg daily usually for 6 weeks or with influenza vaccination for 2-3 weeks after vaccination.
Contraindications
Epilepsy, history of gastric ulceration, severe renal disease.
Precautions
Confused or hallucinatory states, congestive heart disease (may exacerbate oedema), elderly, tolerance to the effects of amantadine may develop in Parkinsons disease, liver disease.
Interactions
Anticholinergic agents, L-dopa, CNS stimulants, CNS depressants.
Pregnancy

Side Effects
Anorexia, anxiety, confusion, dizziness, dry mouth, GI disturbances, hallucinations, headache, impaired concentration, insomnia, lethargy, livedo reticularis, myalgia, palpitation, peripheral oedema, postural hypotension, slurred speech, sweating, movement disorders, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, psychosis, rash, seizure, tremor, urinary incontinence, urinary retention, visual disturbances. Rare: Heart failure, leucopenia, photosensitisation
