Composition
lnj 250 mg/500 mg/1 gm/2 gm: Ceftazidime 250 mg/500 mg/1 gm/2 gm (as pentahydrate); powder in vials.
Indications & Dosage
Susceptible infections due to sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria: BY IV INF, ORIV INJ OR DEEP IM INJ: Adult: 1-2 g every 8 hours; Children above 2 months: 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses; below 2 months, 25-60 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses. Complicated urinary-tract infection: BY IV INF, ORIV INJ OR DEEP IM INJ: Adult: 1-2 g every 8-12 hours; Children above 2 months: 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses; below 2 months, 25-60 mg/kg/day in 2 divided dose. Septicaemia, Hospital-acquired pneumonia, Meningitis: BY IV INF, ORIV INJ OR DEEP IM INJ: Adult: 2 g every 8 hours; Children above 2 months: 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses; below 2 months, 25-60 mg/kg/day in 2 divided dose. Febrile neutropenia: BY IV INF, ORIV INJ OR DEEP IM INJ: Adult: 2 g every 8 hours; Children above 2 months: 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses; below 2 months, 25-60 mg/kg/day in 2 divided dose. Prophylaxis for transurethral resection of prostate: BY IV INF, ORIV INJ OR DEEP IM INJ: Adult:1 g, single dose to be administered up to 30 minutes before procedure and may be repeated ifnecessary when catheter removed. Pseudomonal lung infection in cystic fibrosis: BY IV INF, ORIV INJ OR DEEP IM INJ: Adult: 100-150 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses;max. 9 g per day;Children above 2 months: 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses; below 2 months, 25-60 mg/kg/day in 2 divided dose. Bone Infection: BY IV INF, ORIV INJ: Adults: 2 gm every 12 hr. Children: 1 month-12 yr: 30-50 mg/kg every 8 hr, up to 6 gm/day; 0-4 weeks: 30 mg/kg every 12 hr.
Administration
Inject deep IM into large mass muscle. IV: Ceftazidime can be administered IVP over 3-5 min or IV intermittent infusion over 15-30 min; final concentration for IV administration should not exceed 100 mg/ ml. Rotate IV sites every 72 hours. Assess for phlebitis and extravasation. For IV bolus, reconstitute 1-2 gm with 10 ml SWFI, D5W, or NaCI. Shake to dissolve. For intermittent infusion, further dilute in 50-100 ml D5W or NS. IM: Reconstitute each gm with 3 ml SWFI or bacteriostatic water for injection.

Stability
For reconstituted solution and IV infusion in NS or D5W solution is stable for 24 hours at room temperature, 10 days when refrigerated, or 12 weeks when frozen.
Precautions
Hypersensitivity, impaired renal and hepaticfunction.
Interactions
Aminoglycosides, loop diuretics.
Side Effects
Abdominal discomfort, agranulocytosis, allergic reactions,anaphylaxis, aplastic anaemia, blood disorders, confusion, disturbances in liver enzymes, dizziness, eosinophilia, haemolytic anaemia, hallucinations, headache, hypertonia, leucopenia, nervousness, pruritus, rashes, fever and arthralgia, sleep disturbances, urticaria, GI disturbances, Rare: Stevens-Johnsonsyndrome, thrombocytopenia, toxic epidermal necrolysis, transient cholestatic jaundice,transient hepatitis
