Composition
Inj 2.5 mg: Per ml: Fondaparinux sodium 5 mg; 0.5 ml (2.5 mg) pre-filled syringe. Inj 7.5 mg: Per ml: Fondaparinux sodium 12.5 mg; 0.6 ml (7.5 mg) pre-filled syringe.
Indications & Dosage
Prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism in patients after undergoing major orthopaedic surgery of the hip or leg, or abdominal surgery: BY SC INJ: 2.5 mg daily, starting 6-8 hr post-operation then once daily, up to 11 days (24 days in Hip fracture surgery) Treatment of deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonaryembolism: BY SC INJ: Body weight <50 kg: 5 mg daily, Body weight 50-100 kg: 7.5 mg daily, Body weight above100 kg: 10 mg daily. An oral anticoagulant (usually warfarin) is started at the same time. Fondaparinux should be continued for at least 5 days and until INR less than or equal to 2 for atleast 24 hours. Children: Not recommended.
Administration
Do not administer IM, only via SC inj, give intermittently in Sodium chloride 0.9%. For ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, add requisite dose to 25-50ml infusion fluid and give over 1-2 minutes. Rotate injection sites using left andright anterolateral or left and right posterolateral abdominal wall. Do not expel air bubble from prefilled syringe before injection to prevent expelling drug from syringe.
Contraindications
Severe renal impairment, acute bacterial endocarditis, patients with active bleeding.
Precautions
Haemorrhage, renal or hepatic impairment, active gastro-intestinal ulcer, bleeding disorders, brain surgery, elderly patients, low bodyweight, ophthalmic surgery, recent intracranial haemorrhage, risk of catheter thrombus during percutaneous coronary intervention, spinal or epidural anaesthesia (risk of spinal haematoma-avoid if using treatment doses), spinal surgery
Interactions
Fibrinolytic agents, desirudin, heparin, heparinoids, other antiplatelet drugs, NSAIDs.

Anaemia, bleeding, thrombocytopenia (uncommon), purpura, abnormal liver function tests, oedema.
