Composition
Tab: Estradiol valerate 2 mg.
Indications & Dosage
HRT for Climacteric syndrome: Adults (female): 1 mg or 2 mg daily. For maintenance, use lowest effective dose. Prophylaxis of osteoporosis: Adult: 2 mg daily. In women with an intact uterus add a progestogen for 12 days of each cycle. Children: Not applicable.
Contraindications
Impaired hepatic excretory function such as Dubin-Johnson & Rotor syndromes, sickle cell anaemia, acute or chronic liver disease, jaundice, porphyria, disorders of lipid metabolism, oestrogen dependent carcinomas, endometriosis, history or factor of predisposition to thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, cerebrovascular disease, history of pruritus, during pregnancy deteriorating otosclerosis, idiopathic jaundice or pemphigoid gestations (herpes gestations), undiagnosed genital bleeding, pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions
Hypertension, myocardial or renal disease, asthma, varicose veins, epilepsy, chloasma, uterine fibro-myomata. Examine BR pelvic organs & breasts before & regularly during treatment (risk of breast and endometrial carcinoma)
Interactions
Diuretics, antihypertensives, liver enzyme inducing drugs.
Side Effects
GI upset, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, breast tenderness and enlargement, breakthrough bleeding, headache, dizziness, impaired liver function, cholestatic jaundice, epistaxis, migraine, thromboembolic disorders (consider withdrawal), exacerbation of varicose veins, in-creased blood pressure, transient erythema, generalized pruritus, lower glucose tolerance, endometrial carcinoma in postmenopausal women.
