Composition
Cap/Tab 25000 IU/50000 IU: Vit A 25000 IU/50000IU.
Indications & Dosage
Vitamin A deficiency, vitamin A deficiency associated with ocular defects (particularly xerophthalmia): Children 1-11 months: 5000 units daily, to be taken with or after food, higher doses may be used initially for treatment of severe deficiency Children 1-17 years: 10 000 units daily, to be taken with or after food, higher doses may be used initially for treatment of severe deficiency Adult: 100,000 units daily for 3 days, followed by 50,000 units daily for 2 wk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to vitamin A.
Precautions
Patients should be closely monitored. Evaluate other sources of vitamin A.
Interactions
Retinoids, cholestyramine resin.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy.
Lactation
Not recommended.
Side Effects
Malaise, fever Irritability, vertigo, lethargy, headache, drying or cracking of skin, hypercalcaemia, weight loss, visual changes, hyper vitaminosis A. Overdose can cause rough skin, dry hair, an enlarged liver, and a raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate and raised serum calcium and serum alkaline phosphatase concentrations.
